Interested in applying?

To be eligible for the Roosevelt Innovation Academy, you must be in 9th, 10th or 11th grade. For 10th graders applying to the IA, the second application deadline is April, the 22nd. If you're interested, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the program by reading through the pages on our website.

Step 2: Like our Facebook page to get up-to-date information about the program.


Step 3: Write a personal statement of around 500 words and email it to Joe Bonnici ( In the essay, answer ONE of the following questions. They come directly from the 2017-2018 Common Application for universities:


  1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

  2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 

  3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

  4. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?


Step 4: Finally, begin preparing for the interview by thinking about the questions below:


  1. If you could study one of your passions in more depth, what would it be and how would you push yourself to learn more?

  2. What do you hope to learn by being part of the Innovation Academy?

  3. ​What will you be able to contribute to the academy?

  4. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a learner?

  5. Do your current grades adequately reflect who you are as a student? Why or why not?

  6. If you could change one thing about education, what would you change?

  7. Are you willing to make your work transparent by maintaining a blog and a website that will be shown to people throughout the world?

  8. What is one thing you would like mastery in?

  9. What is your biggest failure and what did you learn from it?
